QWDS endeavoured to ensure fair wages and bonus for the stone quarry workers under section 12(3)of industrial disputes act. This benefit has been enjoyed by the workers with great satisfaction.
Due to sustained lobbying by QWDS, the Government has imposed on the lessee the ensuring of minimum acceptable working conditions in the stone quarries. This condition has to be strictly adhered to by the license holder. The facilities to be provided by the license holder are: Drinking Water, Sanitary facilities, First Aid facility, Labourers’ Health and Precautionary Safety measures such as helmets, Dust Masks, Mine goggles, ear plugs, shoes, etc.
Organized and managed a co-educational Residential School exclusively for the children of stone quarry workers of 12 districts. This school functioned successfully from 2001 to 2011.
QWDS worked closely with the Two-member Commission, appointed by the honorable Supreme Court to study the bondedness in stone quarries of Tamil Nadu. Subsequently, QWDS rescued 496 Quarry workers in Dindigul district with the help of government officials and enabled their economic independence. To this effect a Government Order was issued by the State Government.
QWDS played a vital role in regulation of insurance claims, accident compensation for quarry workers in 13 districts in Tamil Nadu. As per the Workmen Compensation Act, accident compensation claims are made and received.
Quarry workers were not hitherto included in the mainstream construction labor sector for claim of benefits. QWDS liaison with government officials and ensured the inclusiveness of the quarry workers into the mainstream construction labor sector. To this effect a G.O (No 59) was issued by the Labour Department of Tamil Nadu Government on 28- 03- 2001.
